What sound effects does a racing or driving game need?

Engine loops at several speeds, tyres, gear changes, collisions and race events. How driving games build an engine sound from loops, and the full list a racer needs.

How do games make car engine sounds?

Most driving games build the engine from a few seamless loops at different engine speeds, typically idle, low, mid and high, and crossfade between them as the revs change, bending each loop's pitch a little within its range. Pitching one recording up and down across the whole range is the simple version and suits an arcade game, but it sounds thin at the extremes. One-shots cover what a loop cannot: the start, a rev, a stall, a gear change and a turbo blow-off.

What sounds does a racing game need?

The engine loops and their one-shots; gear shifts up and down; tyre screech plus a skid loop whose volume follows how much the car is sliding; surface loops such as gravel and wet road; brakes and the handbrake; light and heavy collisions and a rollover; and the race layer, which is the countdown and go, lap complete, final lap, position gained and lost, wrong way and the finish. The Racing and Driving pack on this site is built to exactly that list in 30 sounds.

Why do engine and skid loops have to be seamless?

Because they play continuously, so any fade or gap where the file ends and starts again is heard on every cycle, and a two-second loop repeats thirty times a minute. Many generated and recorded loops ease in and out, which is right for a one-shot and wrong for a loop. Every loop in this catalogue is checked at the join, by level and by waveform, before it ships.

What about motorcycles, traffic and futuristic vehicles?

They need their own recordings rather than a pitched car. The Vehicles and Engines library has 144 sounds in nine sections: car engine start and idle, revs and acceleration, tyres and brakes, crashes and impacts, horns and alarms, doors and interior mechanics, motorcycles, ATVs and off-road vehicles, sci-fi vehicles, and traffic and road ambience for open-world and city games.

Where can I get free car sound effects?

There are two free sets on itch.io. Free Racing and Driving Sounds has a heavy collision, a trackside crowd, an engine stall, gravel and wet-road loops, a handbrake, a position-lost cue and a wrong-way warning. Free Vehicle Sounds has an ignition key turn, a car door, a horn, a tyre screech, a quick rev, an old engine failing to start, a garage roller door and a gas station ambience loop. Both are uncompressed WAV with no attribution required.
